I use various mediums on several pieces of paper, cut them into pieces, and then assemble them all together to form one piece. Such repeated play on paper is later created into a series, combined into a picture book or laid out as sequences. I am inspired by conventional settings, nature, objects and ordinary events. I try to focus on the subtle beauty and overlooked details of such things through my pieces by using vivid and pastel colors that contrast the reality but personified into special characters or scenes. Nothing is truly monumental in these artworks; rather they illustrate the emotional eventfulness caused by tiny changes and interruptions of our daily lives. There are no black or white situations, but only lingering hazy and dreamlike moments.
The short stories that my pieces are based on are an assemblage of sporadic entries edited along the progression of the series. The stories have an addition of magical elements such as the portrayal of animals as main protagonists and supernatural events. Also, the rarity of lasting kinship between the characters is always present. Through the translation of the text through my artworks, I hope to rekindle the appreciation for uniqueness of the everyday surroundings and connections. However, my works are not just a longing for the past, the simpler times, rather they serve as a reminder to cherish the norm.
Oftentimes, I digitally scan and combine these series of works into a book and print them out to create a physical object that one can hold on to and carry it around. I always look forward to the joy of holding things compressed into a small object. If not put together into a book, I lay them out in order, eye level with the viewers to create an intimate experience of reading the artworks.
